The Republic of Moldova can bank on the European Union’s full support in this difficult period and on its path to the European family, said the President of the European Council Charles Michel, who is in Chisinau on a visit. The official noted the EU supports the Republic of Moldova not only by statements, but also by concrete actions and assistance and the leaders of the 27 EU member states recently expressed once again their solidary with the people of the Republic of Moldova and requested the European Commission to present a support package until summer, IPN reports.

In a news conference held in Chisinau together with President Maia Sandu, Charles Michel said that Russia continues attacking free people in Ukraine, while the Republic of Moldova is seriously impacted by this war. “Russia continues to destabilize you country using different areas: cyber-attacks, arranged protests and other disruptive activities. It is an attempt to destabilize the country, but you powerfully responded to these threats so far. This way, Russia was stopped and we have full confidence in the Government’s capacity to cope with all these threats,” said the European official.

According to him, the European Union is solidary with the Moldovan citizens in this very difficult period. “We mobilized over €1 billion the past year to support the Republic of Moldova, its resilience and stability. This means that we support not only with words, but also with concrete actions and support. We are ready to do even more and in the last meeting we had, the 27 European states, their leaders decided to once again express their solidarity with the people of the Republic of Moldova and requested the European Commission to present a support package by summer,” stated Charles Michel.

He also said that the EU candidate status is a historic opportunity for the Republic of Moldova and its people. Therefore, the Republic of Moldova should continue implementing the commitments made to the EU, especially the comprehensive justice sector reform, the fight against corruption and depoliticization of state institutions.

President Maia Sandu noted that despite all the difficulties, the Republic of Moldova remains devoted to freedom, democracy and the rule of law. “Moreover, we managed to strengthen our positions, to build resilience and to become more powerful. This accomplishment was possible also owing to the solid support offered by the European Union and its member states,” said the official.

According to her, today the Republic of Moldova is an EU candidate state and the authorities aim to open accession negotiations as soon as possible and therefore make effort to implement the recommendations of the European Commission and to approximate the European legislation. “We are aware that this is a complex process, but we assumed responsibility for achieving the high standards that are needed for joining the EU. We work to have an upright, independent, responsible and transparent justice system so that the citizens enjoy correct and equitable treatment before the law. We fight corruption and gradually eliminate the influence exercised by oligarchs in the economy, politics, media and justice,” concluded Maia Sandu.
