The European Commission will propose doubling the quotas on the Moldovan agricultural products exported to the European market. Thus, Moldova may be able to export 40,000 tonnes of apples, 2,000 tonnes of tomatoes, and by 10,000 tonnes of plums and grapes. This is almost as much as Moldova’s exports to other markets, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Dacian Cioloş said in a meeting with President Nicolae Timofti, IPN reports.

The presidential press service said the head of state had a meeting with Dacian Cioloş and Cecilia Malmstrom, European Commissioner for Home Affairs, at the State Residence on May 22. “The signing of the Association Agreement with the EU on June 27 offers a chance for a better life to all the country’s citizens,” said Nicolae Timofti.

Cecilia Malmstrom welcomed the abolition of the EU visa requirements for Moldovans, saying this decision confirms the results achieved in the process of modernizing the country until now. “Strengthening of democratic institutions, reformation of the judicial system and corruption fighting must continue to be top priorities on the Moldovan Government’s agenda,” she stated.

In 2014-2020, the European Union will allocate €120 million for modernizing agriculture and for implementing rural development programs in Moldova. The first tranche of €64 million will be disbursed in July.

Dacian Cioloş and Cecilia Malmstrom are paying a visit to Moldova on May 22 and 23.
