In light of the results achieved by Moldova, and of the ongoing reform efforts, the European Commission has recommended that the Council of the EU opens accession negotiations with the country. A final decision on the opening of negotiations with Moldova will be taken by the member states at the December 14-15 meeting of the Council of the EU, IPN reports, with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.

“This is an important day for Moldova’s future – the European Commission recommended the member states of the European Union to open accession negotiations with Moldova. This step represents recognition of our common efforts – of the state institutions that work to transform the country and of the citizens who choose peace, democracy and development,” stated President Maia Sandu.

The official noted that the European Commission’s report confirms that Moldova the past year has done serious reforms that prepare the country for becoming a European state. “Today’s decision of the European Commission encourages us and makes us to more responsibly continue the initiated things – to make Moldova stronger, a state that ensures peace at home and contributes to regional security, and takes care of the wellbeing of its citizens,” said President Sandu.

“The road we chose to follow is full of challenges. We are not afraid of work and our objective is for Moldova to be ready to join the EU by 2030. The Republic of Moldova in the European Union is our only chance to guarantee a future of peace, freedom and prosperity for the whole country.”
