Moldova will receive a grant from the EU to rehabilitate the access road to the border crossing Galați-Giurgiulești-Reni and build a beltway around Giurgiulești village, with a parking lot for trucks. The European Commission has selected 134 transport infrastructure projects, including from Moldova, to offer grants worth over 7 billion euros under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development applied for the grant in January of this year. The access road, which is currently in poor condition, will be expanded to four lanes and will be rehabilitated according to European standards. A new road will also be built, 3.15 km long, which will bypass the village of Giurgiulesti. In this way, all heavy vehicles going to the port or border crossing will bypass the village. The residents of Giurgiulesti will get rid of noise and environmental pollution, and drivers will reach their destination faster, says a press release issued by the Ministry. Also here, a parking lot will be built for trucks waiting to pass the customs. The total cost of the infrastructure projects is 15,570,000 euros, and 50% will be covered by the European Union through the CEF.
The Connecting Europe Facility is the EU’s most important instrument for supporting trans-European infrastructure projects. The money provided by the EU is intended for infrastructure projects, upgrades and improvements on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), involving rail transport, inland waterways, sea or river ports, and road infrastructure.
