European Action Movement will support a single opposition candidate for mayor

The “European Action” Movement (EAM) will support a single opposition candidate for the office of Chisinau General Mayor, if he or she will be a personality or will be given the vote of other parties, Info-Prim Neo reports. Chairman of EAM Anatol Petrencu told a news conference on March 26 that although the party was created on October 22, 2006, it was not yet registered at the Ministry of Justice. The pretext was the fact that authorities found forged signatures. Even though the party sued the Ministry of Justice and obtained a positive decision at the Court of Appeals on February 13, it was refused registration. At the same time, Petrencu says that at the order of the General Prosecutor’s Office the law enforcement bodies intimidate the members of the party. Anatol Petrencu says that the events occurred in the case of the party are a violation of the freedom of assembly, as well as of the right to participate in elections. In light of this situation, the cited source says that EAM decided to participate in elections by other means. The members of the party will run as unaffiliated candidates. “The National Council of EAM allowed its members to use the symbol of any democrat party, ready to accept the members of EAM in elections. As regards the elections for the office of Chisinau Mayor, Petrencu says that EAM is willing to support the candidacy selected by other political parties. Among the personalities who deserve to candidate for the office of Chisinau Mayor, Petrencu named Eugen Doga, Veaceslav Ionita, Nicolae Dabija, Valeriu Lazar, and Nicolae Tau. In case the opposition parties will not reach an agreement, MAE will decide on its own. At the moment, the number of EAM numbers 10 thousand members.
