The European Parliament wants to know the truth about the tragic events that happened in Moldova after the April 5, 2009. The request was formulated in the join statement with recommendations for Moldova that was adopted at the 12th meeting of the Moldova-EU Cooperation Committee held in Chisinau on February 16-17, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“It is important to have a result. The truth about who and what did after April 5 should be made public. We asked it in the statement and at the meetings with the Minister of the Interior and the members of the parliamentary investigation commission,” said the Committee's co-president on behalf of the European Parliament, Romanian MEP Monica Macovei.
“I asked the parliamentary commission to step up the investigations and make the results public as it has worked since October. On the other hand, we should have a juridical truth. The Prosecutor's Office and the Ministry of the Interior should tell us what happened and who must be held accountable,” Monica Macovei said.
She also said that if those to blame will not be punished, the April events could repeat or the people's distrust in justice could increase.
“The lack of trust in the state institutions causes chaos and is of no help to democracy. It is the opposite of what we want to build in Moldova,” Monica Macovei said.
Speaking about the judicial reform designed to bring Moldova closer to the EU, Monica Macovei recommended that this reform should start with the replacement of people. “It is important who the people are. It is not enough to have good laws as the people cannot be tested by laws. They must be honest and professional,” the MEP said.
As to corruption in the legal system, Monica Macovei stressed that when it exists everything goes wrong in the country.
