Europe Day will be celebrated officially on May 9, simultaneously with Victory Day. The Cabinet approved a legislative initiative to this effect in its July 20 meeting, IPN reports.

The authors of the initiative say the celebration of Europe Day on May 9 has a symbolic importance for the Republic of Moldova, which declared the European integration the main desideratum of the pursued foreign policy. It is mentioned that the Republic of Moldova became a member of the Council of Europe on July 13, 1995, while the Moldova – EU Association Agreement was signed on June 27, 2014.

The amendments are made to the Parliament decision concerning commemorative days, holidays and nonworking days in Moldova and to the Labor Code.

Europe Day or Schuman Day is marked annually by the European community and the partner countries on May 9. The holiday was instituted in memory of the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Robert Schuman, who is considered the initiator of the foundation of the European Union.
