The Head of the European Union Delegation to Moldova Dirk Schuebel opened Europe Day in Balti on May 14. The opening ceremony took place in Vasile Alecsandri square, Info-Prim Neo reports. The event was attended by Acting President of Moldova Marian Lupu and EU Ambassadors. “Europe Day was celebrated in Chisinau on May 7. Today we mark it in northern Moldova, in Balti. It is a very important holiday for us. Moldova is geographically located in the center of Europe and we hope it will form part of the EU in the near future,” said Marian Lupu. He said that the integration into the EU is a priority for Moldova. He congratulated the residents of Balti municipality and visited the European Town, where the EU member states put up gastronomic tents with traditional European food and drinks. Dirk Schuebel said the Eastern Partnership is designed to bring Moldova into Europe and the Government of Moldova cooperates with the EU in liberalizing the visa regime for Moldovan travelers. In another development, the Ambassador said the trips by plane to the EU will be cheaper when Moldova and the EU establish a common airspace. “Moldova will be ultimately integrated into the EU. It is good that this holiday was organized in Balti too. Until now, all the important events were concentrated in Chisinau. The people should know more about the events that take place” said the head of the French Language Department of the Balti State University “Alecu Russo” Ludmila Cabac. Activities to present tourism and business offers, cultural events and contests were staged in Balti on the occasion of Europe Day. There were also organized foreign language schools, where the visitors learned words and phrases in European languages. The event will close with a concert involving Katy Rain, Gloria, Mihai Teodor, Karizma and other national singers and the British band “Monarchy”. In 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed laying the basis of a federation for maintaining peace. Europe Day is marked on May 9.
