The Euro-Unionist Convention gave up running in elections as an electoral contender, but will support the unionist candidates in a number of single-member constituencies. In a news conference at IPN, Valentin Dolganiuc, a member of Moldova’s first Parliament, read a memorandum of the Convention, which says that the decision not to run was taken because they didn’t manage to consolidate an authentic Euro-unionist force of the right and in a move not to compromise the Romanian national interests in the Republic of Moldova following weak results owing to the fragmentation of the unionist vote. Immediately after the elections, the Euro-Unionist Convection will become actively engaged in the organization and consolidation of a united Romanian political pole in the Republic of Moldova.
Valentin Dolganiuc called on the administration of the electoral bloc ACUM not to allow the fragmentation of the vote of the Euro-unionist electorate and to withdraw the candidates who are not on eligible places on lists in single-member constituencies where there are other candidates of the right with bigger chances of winning the elections. He also called upon the voters to mediate and choose the candidates with assumed Euro-unionist programs before casting their ballots. The voters are also urged to boycott the consultative referendum that, according to the Euro-Unionist Convention, is an instrument for polishing up the spoiled image of the ruling party and this encroaches upon the human rights and freedoms.
Boris Volosatyi, director of the Chisinau-based Lyceum “Gheorghe Asachi”, who will run independently in single-member constituency No. 33, said there is a real danger that the unionist forces after the parliamentary elections will be outlawed and he thus decided to become involved in this competition. He advised the leader of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” Andrei Năstase to withdraw his candidacy from the single-member constituency as he will anyway enter Parliament on the national list of the electoral bloc ACUM and to allow unionist candidates to enter the legislature as these will later become allies. A unionist group should be constituted in the future Parliament to defend the national interests of the Romanians in the Republic of Moldova. The union can be achieved by concrete steps and the unification of the education systems is the first step that should be taken.
Pro-rector of the University of European Studies Valeriu Cerba, who runs in single-member constituency No.26, said he became involved in the electoral competition because the Republic of Moldova is in a difficulty situation and encounters big economic problems. The low salaries and high level of corruption in the country led to considerable migration.
The Euro-Unionist Convention consists of members of the first Parliament, historians, professors, associations and unionist political movements.
