The country’s reunification is a priority for the Government of the Republic of Moldova and every effort will be made for the country to be reunified in the future. Namely the Filip Government achieved results in this field after the negotiations with the Transnistrian side were resumed in Berlin last June, under the guarantee of the foreign partners, Democratic MPs Eugeniu Nikiforchuk stated in the public debate “What are the chances of unfreezing the frozen Nistru conflict?” that was staged by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.

The politician said all the communication platforms between Chisinau and the Transnistrian side are functional, starting with the political component and ending with the bodies working on areas. The position of the Democratic Party and of the Government is that Moldova should be regarded only as a unitary state with a special status for the Transnistrian region, while the politicians who promote the country’s federalization are simply naïve.

Eugeniu Nikiforchuk noted that starting with 1992, peace has kept and a political dialogue has been maintained, while the prospects for the two sides of the Nistru River to come closer to each other are now more real and there are examples that inspire confidence. One of such examples is the fact that over 300,000 people in the Transnistrian region have Moldovan passports, while the population of Transnistria is of about 380,000. Also, about 1,300 Transnistrian enterprises registered with the State Registration Chamber of Moldova and enjoy the same benefits as the business entities operating on the right side of the Nistru.

“About ten years ago, the Transnistrian region’s exports to the Russian Federation represented 50-60%, as opposed to only 7-8% at present. The business actually promotes the reunification of the state and today there are enough preconditions for peace to be kept and the country to be reunified through correct governance and by dialogue,” stated the MP.

In the same connection, Eugeniu Nikiforchuk said they reached an agreement and there will be set up the first Ukrainian joint border crossing point where Moldovan customs officers and border policemen will be present. Such a move wasn’t wanted the previous years, when the Government was headed by a representative of the Liberal Democratic Party.

”Today, starting with the first point, we will manage to fight smuggling, illegal trafficking in goods and persons on the Transnistrian segment. The intention is to constitute six such points so that we could fully control the border segment with Ukraine,” said Eugeniu Nikiforchuk.

The public debate “What are the chances of unfreezing the frozen Nistru conflict?” is the 71st installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are organized with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
