The reduction in the number of seats of MP will make the legislative body more efficient, said Democratic MP Eugen Nickiforchuck. According to him, the proposal to hold a referendum on the reduction in the number of seats of MP forms part of a broad administration reform and the Government reform is the first stage. The issue was developed in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.
Eugen Nickiforchuck said the referendum on the reduction in the number of seats of MP is a commitment assumed by the Democratic Party in 2016. The first stage of this reform – of the Government - was already implemented. The number of ministries was reduced from 16 to 9. The output of the legislature will increase when the Parliament reform is done. “It will be much easier to control the work of MPs. We hope there will be only 61 MPs. All the citizens will know not only their name, but also their face,” stated the MP.
He noted that they aim to hold the referendum simultaneously with the parliamentary elections so as to avoid spending public finances. Furthermore, the subject of the plebiscite is similar to the parliamentary election as it refers to the legislature and its composition. “We should find out if the majority of people support this proposal. If the people’s vote is positive, we will discuss with experts and with the Venice Commission to find a correct legal formula and to implement the people’s wish,” said Eugen Nickiforchuck.
Journalist and analyst Valeriu Reniță said there is general understanding of the fact that the bureaucratic procedures should be reduced. Many states debate the idea that a lot of bureaucracy does harm to a state. “For our territory and our population, I think it is more efficient to have a lower number of ministries. This conception refers to Parliament too,” he stated.
On November 13, the Democratic Party proposed holding a referendum concomitantly with the parliamentary elections set for February 24, 2019. In the plebiscite, the people will pronounce on the proposal to reduce the number of MPs from 101 to 61 and also on the possibility of withdrawing the seat of MP by the voters when they are not satisfied with the MPs’ work.
