“Eugen Ionesco” theatre will have its own stage

The most popular theatre in Moldova, with a history of almost 16 years, “Eugene Ionesco” will have its own premises at last. It is located in the building of the former entertainment venue “Moscova”, on Renasterii Boulevard in Chisinau. According to the Press Service of the Presidency, the new premises were offered by State authorities and were presented to the troupe by President Vladimir Voronin. The head of state said it was noteworthy that the event happened one day after the Eugene Ionesco’s 13th death anniversary. “The theatre enters a new stage in its history. I wish to you that it will be as glorious as before. I hope you will make our and foreign spectators happy with new exceptional plays”. Voronin said, mentioning that the architecture and modern style of the new building matches the innovative spirit of “Eugene Ionesco” theatre. The president mentioned about the opportunity of adjusting the rooms of the building to the necessities of a professional dramatic troupe. In this context, the head of state launched the idea of working out a refit project and engage specialists. According to the theatre’s art director Petru Vutcarau, the improvement of the working conditions will lead to the continuous perfecting of the team, as well as its strengthening. “Eugene Ionesco” Theatre was founded on September 11, 1991 by a team of actors, who graduated from “Shciuikin” Theatre School in Moscow. In 1993 the Theatre became a member of ITEM (Informal European Theatre Meeting). In 1994, the theatre launched and organised together with the Ministry of Culture the first International Theatre Festival in Moldova – The biennale of “Eugene Ionesco” Theatre (BITEI), which reached the 7 edition this year. “Eugene Ionesco” Theatre has a series of prestigious awards at international theatre festivals: Tallinn (Estonia), Ivano-Frankovsk (Ukraine), Oradea, Bucuresti, and National Gala of Dramatic Recitals of the International Culture and Art Centre “Geroge Apostu”, all from Romania, and others.
