The third EU Sustainable Energy Week was launched in the central park of Chisinau on June 13. Thus, a number of thematic activities will be staged in Chisinau and in Calarasi, Orhei and Balti during seven days, until June 19. These will be all organized by the European Union Delegation to Moldova, IPN reports.

In the period, the people will be able to take part in exhibitions, project presentations, roundtable meetings and film screenings. There will be also staged seminars for teachers and students of the Technical University of Moldova. The EU Sustainable Energy Week will end with the concert “Sunday Fest”, which will be accompanied by recreational activities, including an exhibition of renewable energy technology and activities for children.

Attending the inaugural ceremony, the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola said the EU Sustainable Energy Week was initiated with the aim of generating new ideas, innovations and sustainable energy technologies. Another goal is to initiate discussions on the diversification of the sources of sustainable energy. “The possibility of affording this energy is a very important thing for the people of the Republic of Moldova,” stated Pirkka Tapiola.

He approved of the adoption of the law on renewable energy by Parliament. “Now that we have the law, it’s time to implement it. Real effort must be made by the Government, local authorities and the citizens to transpose the sustainable energy into practice so that this is used more often, while the bills you pay are easier manageable,” said the ambassador.

Deputy Minister of Economy Valeriu Triboi said both energy efficiency and the use of renewable sources of energy are on the agendas of the Government and the Ministry of Economy. These issues are also discussed with members of the specialized European committees and with all the development partners. “We understand how important is it to have energy efficiency in a country where we do not have our own energy resources and to develop alternative energy sources,” he stated, adding that ensuring the renewable energy sources represent 17% of the total energy consumption is the objective for the next four years.

The EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) is a series of activities to build a secure energy future for Europe. Launched in 2006 by the European Commission, it brings together public authorities, private companies, NGOs and consumers to promote initiatives to save energy and move towards renewables for clean, secure and efficient power. In Moldova the event is held for the third time.
