EU support is essential to maintain Moldova’s European path, Deputy Premier

The political and financial support of the European Union is essential to maintain the European path of the Republic of Moldova and to increase the wellbeing of the people, Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated at the informal meeting of foreign ministers of the EU member states. The official participated in the event at the invitation of his counterparts from Romania and Lithuania, IPN reports.

The meeting considered the ways in which the European Union can support the citizens of the Republic of Moldova and the measures needed to counter the interference of the Russian Federation.

Mihai Popșoi presented the significant challenges faced by the Republic of Moldova during the presidential election and spoke about the strategy for combating the malign influence exerted by the criminal groups supported by Russia, which aim to divert the Republic of Moldova from its European path.

In this connection, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the European Union's assistance in building the resilience of state institutions, continuing the reform agenda, fighting corruption and ensuring sustainable economic growth for the benefit of citizens.

Also, the Moldovan official stressed the importance of advancing the EU accession process in order to complete the screening and launch direct negotiations, initially on Cluster I, Fundamental Values.

"We are grateful for the bilateral support provided by the EU member states, which confirms once again that our country has trustworthy friends on whom it can always rely," said the Deputy Prime Minister, quoted in a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The foreign ministers congratulated the Republic of Moldova on the progress made and appreciated the government's effort to preserve stability and contribute to sustainable economic growth. Also, the foreign ministers of the European Union member states reaffirmed the firm support of the European Union and the member states for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the big European family.
