The European Union aims to assist Moldova in achieving the competition-related objectives stipulated in the competition legislation and policy chapter of the DCFTA. A project within which European experts will offer assistance in improving the implementation of the law and regulations in the competition sector of Moldova was launched in Chisinau on January 29, IPN reports.

The goal of the project is to improve the institutional capacities of the Competition Council and to increase competition culture in Moldova. The Council’s employees will be trained to increase efficiency in the investigation of cases.

“We are often in the situation when an economic entity files a complaint to court and the court engages us. We seem to be running after the train. We start a case, open an investigation. The court shifts responsibility at a time when it should be the opposite,” said the Competition Council’s head Viorica Carare.

Among the project’s beneficiaries are also the Ministry of Economy and other ministries associated with the competition sector, the productive sectors of the economy, the private sector and representatives of business organizations. Attending the event, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Octavian Calmac said he hopes the European project will help the Council become a powerful national authority and market regulation instrument.

Head of Operations Section of the EU Delegation to Moldova Aneil Singh said the competition policies are a viable part that ensures the functioning of the market. In such conditions, the companies in Moldova will become more competitive both in the country and abroad.

The Support to the Competition Council Project will last for two years.
