The European Union pays increased attention to human rights and democracy in the countries that are partners of the EU, said the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Peter Michalko. In a national conference held in Comrat, the ambassador noted that this thing is very important in the bilateral relations and has an influence on all the areas. According to him, the EU offers support to its partners so that the human rights standards advance in the Republic of Moldova too, IPN reports.

The event brought together teachers of secondary and higher education institutions of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, Chisinau and the Transnistrian region and leaders of nongovernmental organizations from both banks of the Nistru. Peter Michalko said he is very glad that being in the Republic of Moldova as the Head of the EU Delegation, he can work with a legal framework that already exists between the EU and Moldova. According to him, the preamble to the Association Agreement tells namely about the human rights, on which the bilateral relations are based, and it is very important to ensure everything that is related to democracy, human rights and the rule of law. The official also said that the EU Delegation is interested in keeping in touch with all the components of society for which these elements are important and the non-governmental sector is the most active part of society in this regard.

The event was staged by the Democracy Institute of Comrat and the State University of Comrat in partnership with the Association for Bulgarian Culture “Rodoliubets” and the Center for the Promotion and Protection of Youth Rights within the EU-funded project to build mutual confidence between teachers from both sides of the Nistru.

In the conference, the teachers and representatives of nongovernmental organizations exchanged opinions and good practices in the field of human rights and modern methods of studying the human rights and democracy.
