EU is Moldova’s key commercial partner, “Expert-Grup”

The European Union is the main commercial partner of the Republic of Moldova, the Independent Think Tank “Expert-Grup” confirms by an infographic that shows the importance of the European market for the country. In 2020, Moldova’s exports to the EU represented 67% of the total exports. In the case of baked goods, fats, oils and food from vegetables and fruit, over 80% of these categories of products exported by Moldova went to the EU, IPN reports.

The EU’s direct investment prevails in Moldova’s economy with about 71% of the total investment, according to data covering the period until the start of 2020. At the end of last year, direct investment from the EU in Moldova rose to over US$3 billion.

Among the main sectors of Moldova’s economy that benefitted from the EU’s direct investment were: financial activities, trade, processing industry, information and communications, energy, real estate transactions, building. For comparison, the CIS countries invested most in energy, transport and storage, trade, processing industry and financial activities.

The infographic presents the main indicators of the commercial relations between the Republic of Moldova and European Union and how these developed during the past five years.
