The European Union will allocate about €45 million in budget support to Moldova. The money will reach the country in several days, Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn said in a meeting with Prime Minister Pavel Filip in Brussels, IPN reports, quoting the Government’s press service.
The Commissioner stated the European Union will continue to support the implementation of reforms that are beneficial for the country’s people, including those aimed at fighting corruption, depoliticizing the state institutions and restructuring the banking system.
Johannes Hahn congratulated the Moldovan authorities on the approval of a new agreement with the IMF, which unlocked financing on the part of the World Bank and the European Union. He underlined the importance of ensuring constructive cooperation between the Government and the newly elected President in the interests of the Moldovan people.
For his part, Pavel Filip said that 2016 was a year of stabilization for Moldova, while 2017 is expected to be the year of growth. As to the presidential elections, the Premier said the Republic of Moldova has to learn some things yet so as to ensure a better voting process in the future. “Now the goal is to overcome the ‘electoral fever’ and to start work. I had a discussion with the President-elect and assured him that the Government is ready to cooperate with the presidential institution in the national interests, which are to do reforms, to modernize the country and to continue on the road of European integration,” he stated.
The Prime Minister assured that the mobilization and commitment shown by the current government in implementing the EU recommendations at the start of this year will continue to persist so as to do structural reforms in key areas in accordance with the commitments stipulated in the Association Agreement.
