The flag of the European Union from the legislative body’s presidium became a subject of discussion at the December 9 sitting of Parliament after the leader of the Communist Party, MP Vladimir Voronin inquired what status that blue fabric on the Parliament’s stage has, IPN reports.

“We can organize a lesson on heraldry, symbolism and can place here more flags and invite a specialist to explain things to us. If you want to joke, we can joke, but we should better get down to business as we have to adopt serious laws,” Speaker Igor Grosu replied to him.

Vladimir Voronin insisted on finding out the official status of the EU’s flag in the Republic of Moldova. Igor Grosu responded that the status of this symbol has its roots in 2005-2006, when a ministry was renamed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. “It shows the political and people’s wish that the Republic of Moldova to become part of the EU,” stated the Speaker.

PAS MP Oazu Nantoi intervened. “On March 24, 2005, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova adopted the Statement on the European Integration of the Republic of Moldova by a unanimous vote. It comes from there probably,” he stated.

Dissatisfied with the answer, Vladimir Voronin said he knows these things and he actually inquired about the legal status. His group mate Oleg Reidman noted legal provisions on the use of the flags of other states and foreign organizations should be formulated.
