The Customs Service and the European Union will continue the dialogue on the strategy for developing and modernizing the customs system of Moldova. Such an agreement was reached by the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola and the director of the Customs Service Vitalie Vrabie in a meeting. The European official appreciated the progress made by the institution, especially in increasing the amounts collected into the state budget, IPN reports.
According to the press office of the Customs Service, Pirkka Tapiola also appreciated the accelerated rehabilitation of a number of vulnerable areas that endangered the good functioning of the system. He reiterated the necessity of increasing the salaries of customs employees and of identifying mechanisms for additionally motivating the staff, reducing thus the risk of possible integrity-related incidents.
For his part, Vitalie Vrabie thanked the EU representatives for the consistent support provided to the customs authority through assistance projects with investments in infrastructure and information systems.
“The reforms of the Customs Service are aimed mainly at ensuring the economic security of the state, which can be done by fully collecting the import duties and by promoting professional integrity and transparency in the decision-making and operational processes,” stated Vitalie Vrabie.
The officials also discussed the personnel management reform, which envisions the optimization of the central and regional bodies, including by reducing the administrative posts and redistributing responsibilities. In this connection, the sides noted the assistance of the EU High Level Adviser in Customs Rosario de Blasio in elaborating and implementing the structural optimization conception, whose expertise is based on the best EU practices in the field.
