The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Transnistria whereby it condemns the increased administrative pressure being exercised by the self-proclaimed authorities in Transnistria towards Romanian-language schools. It condemns the politicization of the education policy area, given that freedom of education is a fundamental right. It calls on the authorities to ensure that children and parents are protected from the adverse consequences of the current political situation and to find solutions in the best interest of the children and parents directly concerned, IPN reports.
On its website, Mediafax Agency says the European Parliament calls on the Russian Federation to implement fully the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights that ruled that Russia had violated the right to education in the cases of Moldovan schools using Romanian in the region of Transnistria. It also calls on the OSCE to continue its monitoring and negotiation facilitation activities and to defend the right to education of the students of the Romanian-language schools in Transnistria.
Tiraspol reacted to the resolution, saying the MEPs acted irresponsibly when they adopted it. The Transnistrian administration considers that this resolution was voted at the insistence of the Romanian MEPs.
