Moldova would like to see a new EU security strategy that includes our country as a component of a safety belt for the entire European space and as a first stronghold of defense on the eastern flank. The request was addressed to Ylva Johansson, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, by the Moldovan Minister of the Interior Ana Revenco, at the Leuseni border crossing, where the two officials had a press conference after inspecting a joint Moldova-EU team of border police officers.
The new area of cooperation between Moldova and the EU has been established following the signing on March 17 of an agreement between the two parties, which was drafted in record time and under pressure created by the war in Ukraine. As a result, while Moldova is not a EU member, EU border guards have been deployed at Moldova’s borders both with Ukraine and Romania, and Minister Revenco’s request is based on the prospects of developing and deepening this area of cooperation.
First and foremost, imperatives include the need for the European Union to “innovate its wartime intervention mechanisms”. “Today, when the threats are so diverse and so aggressive, the efforts must be commensurate”, said the minister.
In her speech, Ylva Johansson welcomed the cooperation of the Moldovan border police with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and, in particular, the joint team of border guards at the Leuseni crossing checkpoint. The Commissioner expressed her appreciation for the receptivity of Moldovans in helping Ukrainian refugees, as well as for the qualification and skills of Moldovan border guards on duty. “The European Union supports the Republic of Moldova and is ready to offer even more support”, said the EU Commissioner.
