Moldova’s development partners – the U.S. and the EU – welcomed the parliamentary elections held in Moldova on November 30. They said they took note of the OSCE/ODIHR statement of preliminary findings and conclusions stating that these elections “were characterized by a wide choice of political alternatives and were generally well administered, although the deregistration of one electoral contestant shortly before the election day raised questions about the timing and circumstances”, IPN reports.

“The United States urges Moldova’s leaders to move quickly to form a new government that will serve the Moldovan people, by fighting corruption, promoting reforms that spread the benefits of European integration, and finding a comprehensive and peaceful settlement for its Transnistria region. The future of Moldova belongs to the Moldovan people, and we look forward to working with the new government,” it is said in a press release of the U.S. Department of State.

“The European Union remains committed to work with the future government of Moldova towards a comprehensive, peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict based on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova with a special status for Transnistria,” it is said in the Joint Statement on the Moldovan parliamentary elections issued by Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, and Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations.

The two said that a new impetus to key reforms will be crucial for the Republic of Moldova’s political association and economic integration with the EU.

According to the preliminary election results, the pro-European parties will have enough seats of MP to form a simple parliamentary majority.
