The political crisis in Chisinau and the reciprocal accusations of the politicians showed that the fight against corruption must be definitely intensified so that the Republic of Moldova moves forward on the path to European integration, said the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Dirk Schuebel, Info-Prim Neo reports. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, the official said that the EU will continue to support Moldova, but the authorities should also make effort. “I think the events of last week revealed a definite thing: the fight against corruption in Moldova must be intensified. The mutual accusations weren’t very useful, but showed that this scourge must be combated much more seriously. The European Union, as usual, is ready to support this process, surely if a serious effort is made. In this process, it is important to avoid the politicization of the institutions involved in the fight against corruption,” he said. Dirk Schuebel also said that the relations between Moldova and the EU developed considerably during the last three years and today it is very important that the internal reforms be treated much more seriously than until now. “I think the fight against corruption is the most important thing. If this scourge is defeated, it will mean that this country is on the democratic path,” he stated. As to the Vilnius summit of this autumn, the EU ambassador said it’s not excluded that the Association Agreement will not be even initialed there, but Brussels will continue to support Moldova. “I believe the summit will be a successful one and, even if these agreements are not initialed, we must admit that Moldova managed to negotiate them in a record time compared with other countries. That’s why I think that the country should be proud of everything it achieved in its relations with the European Union,” he said.
