The Ambassador of the European Union in Chisinau, Janis Mazeiks, condemns the violent attacks and the recent online smear campaign against independent media and civil society organizations. The official reports including a worrying trend of using the issue of foreign funding to stigmatize journalists and activists, thus undermining their credibility and essential role in society, IPN reports.
"Acts of intimidation, threats, defamation and spreading false information against journalists and civil society organizations are punishable by law and must be promptly investigated and sanctioned," says Janis Mazeiks.
According to the diplomat, freedom of expression and unrestricted activity of journalists are essential elements of a healthy democracy.
The European Union remains committed to supporting independent media and civil society organizations, fighting disinformation and promoting investigative journalism to ensure that Moldovan citizens have access to accurate and reliable information.
