Gender equality advocates call on Parliament to establish a standing committee for equal opportunities. The commission would be responsible for endorsing relevant legislative acts from the perspective of the impact on gender equality. Similarly, it will hear annually the central authorities regarding the implementation of policies in the field and of international commitments. At the same time, it will be responsible for preventing and combating sexism in parliamentary activity.
During a press conference at IPN held on the occasion of 25th anniversary since the ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, Valentina Bodrug-Lungu, President of the Gender-Center, noted that the government commission in the field of equality between women and men should also be reinvigorated, which at its turn will create an agency in the field of gender equality. This will take care not only of policy making, but also of its monitoring and evaluation.
Another request relates to the strengthening of the institutional mandate of the Council for the prevention of Discrimination and Ensuring Equality, by delegating the powers of investigation and penalization. Also, the notions of "equal pay" for "equal work" or "work of equal value" are required in the normative framework.
The Platform for Gender Equality also insists on the use of feminine forms for management positions in the public space and on the introduction of feminine forms in the Classification of Occupations in the Republic of Moldova.
In order to ensure the rights of women to fair work, it is required to adopt a national plan for the extension of nursery services, so that by 2022 the number of children aged between 0-3 years enrolled in the kindergarten increases by at least 50%.
According to Valentina Bodrug-Lungu, civil society plays a decisive role in the sustainable development of the country, so its opinion must be taken into account when making decisions. At the same time, because "changes in society are starting from each of us", the activist urged women to know and claim their rights.
Concerning the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, Valentina Bodrug-Lungu noted that it provided enormous tools for promoting women's rights and promoting gender equality. It is now based on a transformative approach to society, namely on the active involvement of men in promoting and achieving gender equality and empowering women from all perspectives.
The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women was ratified by the Republic of Moldova on April 28, 1994 and entered into force on July 31, 1994.
