“Equus” wins top prize at UNITEM Gala

The play “Equus”, performed by the troupe of the Dramatic Theater for Youth “From the Rose Street” was designated the Best Play at the Gala of Prizes of the Theater Union of Moldova (UNITEM) that took place at the National Theater “Mihai Eminescu” on March 25. Actress Angela Cioban was awarded for the Best Female Role, while actor Nikita Volok for the Best Male Role. As many as 42 prizes were offered this year, IPN reports.

The prize for the best dramatic play was handed over by President Nicolae Timofti. “Our general culture and education are mainly due to the theater. I have kept in mind this hall since I was 17. I saw many wonderful plays here,” the head of state said in the award ceremony.

Director of the play “Equus” Iurie Harmelin announced that the Theater “From the Rose Street” this year celebrates 35 years of activity and a head office would be the most beautiful present. “We beg you to transfer us from the street to a home,” he stated, addressing the officials.

Acting Prime Minister Vlad Filat offered the Prize for Excellence to the National Opera House soloist Mihai Munteanu, and the actor and teacher at the Bucharest National University of Theater Arts and Cnematography “Ion Luca Caragiale” Mircea Diaconu.

The prize the Country’s Personality went to film and theater actor Mihai Volontir. This prize is offered at the UNITEM Gala for the first time. Actor and humorist Gheorghe Urschi received the prize for General Activity. Gheorghe Urschi and Mihai Volontir couldn’t attend the ceremony and the prizes were given to family members.

The Best Scene Scenery prize went to Adrian Suruceanu for the play “My darling Missis Kronky”, at “Ginta Latină“ Theater. Stela Verebceanu was awarded for the Most Beautiful Costumes in the play “The Beauty and the Beast”, put on at “Luceafarul“ Theater. The Theater “Licurici” won the prize for the Best Children’s Play.

The UNITEM Gala is staged before the World Theater Day that is marked on March 27.
