The Chisinau Electric Transport Company and the Urban Bus Company are to receive the equipment needed to launch the e-ticketing pilot project on one-two municipal trolleybus and bus routes from Mastercard and Visa, deputy mayor Victor Chironda announced in the February 15 ordinary meeting of officials of Chisinau services, IPN reports.

A consulting firm was chosen to collect data about the utilization of public transport by passengers. The information will be transmitted to a company that was contracted by the EBRD to complete the feasibility study for implementing e-ticketing. The electronic equipment is to be installed in 90 trolleybuses and 45 buses, stated mayor Ion Ceban.

Earlier, the municipality announced that the e-ticking pilot project in public transport in Chisinau will be kicked off in March. The system will be piloted during a period of up to six month by the companies MasterCard and VISA, which will cover all the related costs.

It has been ten years since the municipal authorities announced the intention to introduce e-ticketing in public transport. In 2010, the Chisinau City Hall said the citizens of the capital city will pay for trips by public transport by an electronic card starting with 2012. Later the local authorities announced delays and new deadlines.
