The Government started to too timidly adopt the legal acts envisioned in the roadmap for implementing the EU - Moldova Association Agreement. Such a conclusion was reached by the delegation of the European People’s Party (EPP) that has been in Moldova on a working visit during May 23-24. The delegation’s head, Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan, in a news conference at IPN, said that for this Government to be called pro-European, it must sign into law the commitments stipulated in the roadmap and to implement them.
According to the delegation’s head, the goal of the visit was to assess the political situation, the Government’s work and the state of the parties of the political center-right of Moldova. “We consider that the Association Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova, which was ratified, is the most important means of rapprochement between Moldova and the EU. That’s why the implementation of this accord must be the Government’s absolute priority,” stated Siegfried Muresan.
The MEP noted that the Government can find out what administrative and economic reform measures Moldova needs only by looking at the Association Agreement, which was negotiated and decided in concert by Moldova and the European Union.
Siegfried Muresan said that as Romania, the Republic of Moldova needs the assistance of the external partners mainly in corruption fighting, building of a state with the rule of law and functional justice. “My conviction is that those that will create jobs, will invest in the Republic of Moldova during the next few years and will contribute to the prosperity of the Moldovan people will be namely companies from inside the EU,” he stated, adding that a functional legal framework, a transparent taxation system and competitive economy are needed for the purpose.
As regards the theft from the banking system, the MEP said the Moldovans have the right to know what happened in fact. The money must be fully recovered, while those to blame for the frauds must be held accountable. The confidence in the banking system must be restored, while the National Bank of Moldova should step up its surveillance measures.
According to Siegfried Muresan, the delegation that is visiting Moldova includes 19 representatives of parties from different EU member states that form part of the EPP. While in Chisinau, the European officials met with President Nicolae Timofti and members of the diplomatic corps. They also had meetings with representatives of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, the European People’s Party of Moldova, the Party “Action and Solidarity” and of the Political Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” and with representatives of civil society.
