The director of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul” Igor Munteanu said the European Parliament’s resolution reaffirmed the EU’s wish not to provide assistance unconditionally and before the parliamentary elections. The issue was developed in the talk show “Expertise hour” on Jurnal TV channel, IPN reports.
According to him, the tone of the document does not leave illusions as to the fact that the current government could return to normal relations with Brussels after committing so many violations of the fundamental standards. “We cannot hope for something like this,” stated Igor Munteanu.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Valeriu Giletski admitted that it is the government’s responsibility to draw conclusions from the EP’s resolution. The organization of free and fair parliamentary elections is the biggest responsibility of the government. “All the other things will be concentrated on this condition, such as the macro-financial assistance, resumption of financing and others. All these are related to the upcoming event,” he stated, adding serious shortcomings are witnessed in the justice sector.
Valeriu Giletski noted that Moldova meets the minimum democratic standards, but the expectations of the Moldovan citizens and the European partners are not met.
Political commentator Victor Ciobanu said the text of the European Parliament’s resolution is catastrophic for the current administration of Moldova. When the government in a democratic country does not meet people’s and partners’ expectations, this simply leaves.
The European Parliament on November 14 adopted a resolution on the implementation of the EU - Moldova Association Agreement by 396 votes for, 76 votes against and 186 abstentions on November 14. The MEPs criticized Moldova for backsliding on democratic standards and the rule of law.
