The environmental situation of the Nistru's basin has worsened essentially for the last 20 years. The statement was made by the leader Eco-TIRAS NGO, Ilya Trombitchi, on Thursday, October 2, opening a two-day conference in Chisinau called “Management of trans-border Nistru river and the Water Framework Directive of the European Union,” Info-Prim Neo reports. The agenda of the conference comprises 150 reports of environmentalists from Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Romania, the Netherlands and the U.S.A. Parliamentarian Vladimir Ciobanu, the chairman of the parliamentary committee dealing environmental issues, payed special attention to solving the problem of using pesticides and chemicals left from the former farming entities after the USSR's demise. On the OSCE's initiative, a pesticide destroying program rolls out in Moldova, Vladimir Ciobanu said. 2,300 tonnes of chemicals have already being destroyed of a total of 3,500 tonnes. The MP voiced concern with the situation in the Transnistrian area, where, according to him, the issue of toxic chemicals is there unsolved. Vladimir Ciobanu showed confidence that, through joint efforts, the pesticides killer program may also be applied in Moldova's Transnistrian area. A Forum of environment-dealing NGOs working within the basin of the Nistru will take place on the completion of the conference. NGOs from Tiraspol, Bender, Dubasari and other localities in the Transnistrian area attend the conference. The event is organized following an initiative of the International Environmental Association of the Nistru's Protectors, Eco-TIRAS NGO, in cooperation with the Moldovan Science Academy and a branch of Ukraine's Science Academy.
