The Republic of Moldova can bank on a swift response to its application for EU membership. During the next few weeks, there will be delivered a clear response to the Republic of Moldova, which deserves it, given the geopolitical security and humanitarian situation, the President of France Emmanuel Macron stated in a meeting with President Maia Sandu in Paris, IPN reports, quoting Mediafax.

“Russia’s inacceptable aggression against Ukraine is a threat to the stability of the whole region, especially to the Republic of Moldova, as the recent incidents that occurred in the Transnistrian region show that the possibility of the crisis spreading to neighboring countries cannot be ruled out,” said Emmanuel Macron.

According to the Moldovan presidential press service, Maia Sandu said that Moldova banks on France’s assistance in obtaining the status of accession candidate country. “Such a gesture will show to our society and authorities that the efforts to modernize Moldova according to the European model will be supported,” Maia Sandu stated in the meeting.

The interlocutors also discussed the security situation in the region in the context of the war in Ukraine, the Moldovan-French bilateral dialogue and the European agenda of the Republic of Moldova. President Sandu thanked her French counterpart for the assistance offered by France in the management of the refugee crisis and welcomed the creation in April of the support platform for Moldova, which is designed to help the country to overcome the consequences of the war in Ukraine, inflation and the energy crisis and to continue the initiated reforms.

The two heads of state also discussed the creation of the French Agency for Development in the Republic of Moldova, which is to be opened soon in Chisinau and will support important projects in such sectors as energy and irrigation, water supply and sewage, forestation. They raised the project to modernize the railways on the Chisinau-Ungheni segment, which will enable to connect the national railway system to the European network, and also spoke about the bilateral Moldovan-French projects launched the past year in a number of areas. “We appreciate cooperation in the identification and confiscation of the assets stolen in Moldova,” stated Maia Sandu.
