The doctor of an emergency medical assistance team ended up with a broken leg after being assaulted by a drunk patient, IPN reports.

The ambulance was called for a 50-year-old man lying unconscious in the staircase of a block of flats in the capital, the National Center for Emergency Prespital Emergency Medical Assistance reports.

The SAMU Centru team intervened within eight minutes at the scene of the request, where they were met by a witness, who led the medical staff to the patient. It was found that the man was intoxicated and, during the examination, was displaying inappropriate behavior, pushing the medical staff who were trying to help him.

After the assailant pushed the AMU team doctor, the latter fell down the stairs and suffered trauma and was rushed to hospital. The medic, with a broken leg, will undergo treatment and rehabilitation over the next five weeks.

Police intervention has been requested to establish the circumstances of the incident and the measures to be taken against the assailant.

The CNAMUP condemns any act of violence against emergency medical assistance teams and says it will submit proposals to the Ministry of Health on tougher penalties for aggression or violence in the work of AMU teams.

This is not the first time an emergency medical crew has been assaulted while on duty. In January alone, similar incidents occurred in the cities of Cahul, Straseni and Chisinau.
