The Embassy of Turkey in Moldova reacted to the attempted military coup in Turkey, saying the goal of the coup was to oust the legally elected government, but the people foiled this attempt, IPN reports.

“The Turkish people thwarted this attempt in unity and solidarity. The President and the Government continue to fulfill their obligations. The events didn’t involve the whole Armed Forces of Turkey, being triggered by a group of conspirators of the army. In reaction, our people put up resistance,” says the Embassy’s message.

According to foreign press reports, at least 60 people were killed in a coup attempt by a part of the military against the current government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Supporters of the President took to the streets at his call. Gunfire was reported in the Turkish capital Ankara and in Istanbul. More than 700 rebels were arrested.
