Eleven applicants have registered for the competition for the position of judge at the Constitutional Court, announced by the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM). Among them is CSM member Judge Nina Cernat.

Judges Radu Țurcanu and Gheorghe Balan from the Chișinău Court of Appeals, as well as Tatiana Răducanu, judge at the Supreme Court of Justice, applied for the competition.

Among the contenders for the position of constitutional judge are Oleg Potîrniche, coordinating specialist at the Public Services Agency, Teodor Cârnaț, professor at the Faculty of Law at the State University of Moldova and Maria Strulea, Head of the Research and Analysis Department at the Constitutional Court.

Lawyers Mihai Corj, Ilie Rotaru and Procopie Zaharia are also seeking the seat of constitutional judge. Mihail Petrache, legal coordinator at the Institute of Genetics, Physiology and Plant Protection, also applied.

The Superior Council of Magistracy has announced a re-run competition for the selection of a judge at the Constitutional Court, after the previous competition failed. The previous competition failed because no candidate received the required number of votes.

The Constitutional Court has six judges, appointed for a six-year term. Two judges are appointed by parliament, two by the cabinet and two by the Superior Council of Magistracy. The mandate of a judge appointed by the CSM has been left vacant following the death of Eduard Ababei.
