The people do not have confidence in the government not only because of the theft of the US$1 billion, but also because they haven’t been heard since 2011, when they started to protest, because their daily life worsens and because they were disappointed when the Republic of Moldova signed the Association Agreement with the EU and practically no improvement in their life followed, executive secretary of the Central Committee of the Party of Communists (PCRM) Elena Bodnarenko stated in the electoral public debate “Specific traits of presidential elections 2016: vision of parliamentary parties” of the series “What kind of President is society looking for? What society does the President need?”, held by IPN News Agency.
According to the MP, the politicians and candidates for President speak about statehood and a President of the whole people. At the same time, they further divide society. Nobody spokes about Moldova, about the people. “If we go out and ask each citizen what they expect from the presidential elections, everyone can answer that they want to have higher incomes, a job and the possibility of returning their relatives from abroad tomorrow, in a month or three months. No candidate for President promises this,” stated Elena Bodnarenko.
She noted that from the Democratic MP Sergiu Sarbu’s statements at the debate, she understood that the President will be unable to have another opinion than that of the current parliamentary alliance. “When, at the start of 2017, the President will have to promote the law on the pension reform, for example, he wil either promote it or will be dismissed by the parliamentary alliance. That’s why we, the Communists say that the future President will be a puppet in the hands of the power and will be unable to change something and to meet the people’s expectations. That’s why the PCRM boycotts these elections,” stated the MP.
According to her, the future President, elected by the people, will not have the power to dissolve Parliament and to call early legislative elections. That’s why the parliamentary and extraparliamentary opposition must join forces. “None of the candidates will be able to fulfill most of their electoral promises if the parliamentary alliance does not allow to. What do we need to elect a President for in such a case?” asked Elena Bodnarenko. The MP pleads for holding early parliamentary elections.
The September 21 public debate is the 60th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged by IPN with the assistance of the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
