The electronic register of voters will not be used in the March 22 elections to choose the Bashkan (Governor) of Gagauzia. The chairman of the Comrat Election Commission Valentin Cara has told IPN that the legislation of the region wasn’t adjusted in this respect.

“We use the old system and the lists will be presented by mayor’s offices. The electronic register will not be used because the legislation does not regulate such a process,” stated Valentin Cara.

The members of the Comrat Election Commission decided that the stamp ‘voted’ will be put on the loose leaf accompanying the identity card so as to avoid multiple voting.

Contacted by IPN, the president of the Central Election Commission(CEC) of Moldova Iurie Ciocan said the elections to choose the Governor of Gagauzia and the members of the People’s Assembly are organized in accordance with the own regulations of the region and the CEC does not become involved in their organization. At request, the CEC provides the necessary assistance. “The decision is taken by them. I think that if the rules are common for all the electoral process in Moldova, we will only gain from this,” he stated.

Ten candidates have been so far registered as runners in the March 22 elections. The deadline for registrations expires 30 days before the elections.
