Following an urgent request by Ukrenergo and Moldova for emergency synchronization, the Transmission System Operators (TSOs) of Continental Europe agreed to start on March 16, 2022 the trial synchronization of the Continental European Power System with the power systems of Ukraine and Moldova, IPN reports.

The Government of Moldova said this acceleration of the synchronization project ongoing since 2017 has been possible thanks to the previous studies carried out and the adoption of risks mitigation measures.

Continental Europe TSOs are now supporting the stability of the Ukrainian-Moldovan power system following a positive analysis which confirmed that an emergency synchronization is technically feasible with a number of measures to ensure safe and secure power systems.

“This is significant progress for Ukrenergo and Moldelectrica that are operating their respective power systems under extremely difficult circumstances and this opens up the way for future commercial exchanges of energy, after all the tests are completed,” says a press release.

In this connection, President Maia Sandu said the Moldovan authorities know the vulnerabilities as regards the supply of natural gas and electricity and the EU’s decision is welcomed. “But it surely depends on the developments in Ukraine and how swiftly this war ends in practical terms. Now we buy electrical energy only from the power plant situated on the left side of the Nistru. We now have this access theoretically. We hope we will also be able to access energy from the European markets in practice too. Meanwhile, we implement a very important project that was launched last summer – the connection with the Romanian market on the Chisinau – Vulcănești line. This project should have been implemented many years ago. We yet launched it now and this connection will be ensured in several years,” said the official.
