Campaigning on the election day will be allowed, not yet inside polling places and at the entrance to them. Parliament adopted amendments to this effect after giving them a final reading on November 23, IPN reports.
Under the bill, Article 52, paragraph (10) of the Election Code will also be amended so as to exclude electoral silence on the day before the election day. The new regulations will also be added to the Contravention Code. The fine for agitation inside and at the entrance to polling places on the election day will be 750 to 1,500 lei for private individuals and 1,750 to 2,500 lei for persons holding responsible posts or for electoral contenders.
The new regulations provide that if a national referendum is held simultaneously with parliamentary elections, the electoral constituencies and electoral councils are formed accruing to the same criteria.
The legislative initiative was drafted by a group of Democratic MPs based on recommendations formulated by the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities that on October 31 this year approved the report on the analysis, examination and assessment of electoral agitation based on which the early mayoral elections held in Chisinau municipality this summer were invalidated.
