High European officials welcomed the election of Nicolae Timofti as the new President of Moldova and called on the Moldovan political forces to contribute to a constructive dialogue, Info-Prim Neo reports.
In a press statement, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Jean-Claude Mignon says that it will be his pleasure to be able to wish Nicolae Timofti every success during a visit to Moldova at the start of April.
“I am convinced that all the political parties will show responsibility by accepting the democratic legitimacy of the country’s institutions and hence the legitimacy of a President elected in accordance with its constitutional requirements. It is now crucial for all the political parties to continue to work within the existing legal framework and contribute to a dialogue on the revision of the Constitution, as the new texts should be the result of a broad consensus,” said the PACE President.
Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Štefan Füle, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy, made the following statement:
“We welcome the successful outcome of the presidential election in Chisinau, by which the members of the Moldovan Parliament have demonstrated their sense of responsibility before the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. This paves the way for an inclusive dialogue between all political factions with a view to responding further to the economic and social aspirations of the country and consolidating Moldovan society. The EU warmly congratulates President Nicolae Timofti on his election and stands ready to work with him in support of democracy, reforms and the ambitious EU approximation agenda, as well as on the early and peaceful settlement of the Transnistria conflict.”
Nicolae Timofti was elected President of Moldova by 62 votes of MP on March 16. He will be sworn in after the Constitutional Court validates the election results.
