The set of documents required for registering participants in the consultative referendum of February 24, 2019 can be submitted as of December 26 and the election campaign for each candidate starts when they are registered, IPN reports, quoting a decision taken by the Central Election Commission (CEC) in a meeting on December 18.

“The period for nominating and registering the participants in the referendum, the competitors, starts on December 26,  2018, as in the case of the official nomination and registration of electoral contenders as participants in the parliamentary elections. In the case of the referendum, the participants or competitors, political parties and electoral blocs, can start the election campaign by informing the voters whether they are for or against the subjects put up for the referendum, when they are registered,” CEC president  Alina Russun told the press after the meeting.

In the referendum of February 24, the electors will vote for or against the reduction in the number of MPs from 101 to 61 and for or against the recalling of MPs who do not fulfil their obligations by the people.

The voters on February 24 will have four ballots: two for each of the referendum questions and two for the parliamentary elections – one with candidates running in the national constituency and the other one with candidates running in the single-member constituency.

Over 10 million lei will be allocated for organizing and holding the consultative referendum of February 24, 2019. The budget for the parliamentary elections of February 24, 2019 is 110 million lei.
