Pensioners in Chisinau will take to the streets again on Wednesday, February 24, this time to demand pensions of at least 3,000 lei ($235) and cheaper utility bills. Maia Laguta, an outspoken leftist heading the civic association Salvgardare /Safeguard/, assumed leadership of the protests.
“We have repeatedly appealed to the Government and Parliament, we even gave them a deadline to set up a commission to check the activity of the (utilities) Union Fenosa, Termocom, Apa-Canal Chisinău and Moldova Gaz, but nothing has been done”, Laguta told Info-Prim Neo.
“We have demanded that people's control be introduced. So we'll try to find out from Prime Minister Vlad Filat why we've been refused ”, added Maia Laguta.
Earlier, street protests involving Chisinau pensioners erupted in September 2009, when the municipal authorities announced a raise in water rates and waived free rides in public transport for the pensioners.
