The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) completed the investigation into the smuggling and illegal possession of uranium and sent the case that involves eight persons to court, IPN reports, quoting a communique of the PGO.
According to prosecutors, the culprits smuggled the uranium from Russia and were to sell it on the black market of Moldova and abroad. They were arrested in Chisinau last December, when they were trying to put into circulation over 200 grams of the radioactive substance. They asked €600,000 for it (€3,000 per gram).
The eight persons, aged between 33 and 75, were remanded in custody. They are residents of Chisinau municipality and of Orhei and Ocnita towns.
The case will be tried by the Rascani District Court. The culprits face up to ten years in jail.
