Eight new cases of measles were recently confirmed by laboratory tests in the children of a family living in the municipality of Chisinau. Another two suspect cases of measles, in Anenii Noi and in Chisinau, are being investigated, IPN reports.

According to the National Public Health Agency, the family with the eight children belongs to a religious denomination and seven of these recently returned from Romania. The children hadn’t been vaccinated.

The other two suspect cases of measles involve a child from Anenii Noi district and a grownup from Chisinau who recently returned from Dubai where he took part in sports competitions.

As many as 357 confirmed cases of measles were logged during January 1, 2018 – March 26, 2019.

The Ministry of Health warns again that measles remains a highly contagious disease and the parents should take measures to have their children vaccinated as this is the only safe method of protection against measles and other infectious diseases.

Measles can spread swiftly in unvaccinated communities and an infected child can pass on the disease to up to 18 children. The disease is characterized by a feverish state with eruptions accompanied by cough, rhinitis and conjunctivitis.
