Eight customs inspectors of the Leuseni Customs Point and one officer of the Border Police Department will stand trial for passive corruption. The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office finalized the investigation and filed charges against the nine suspects. They risk fines between 1000 and 2000 conventional units and a ban from certain public functions or activities for up to five years, IPN reports.
According to a press release of the Prosecutor General’s Office, between 2014 and 2016, the suspects asked bribes between 50 and 250 euros from bus drivers carrying passengers abroad with the Interbus license. In exchange for the bribe, the customs workers turned a blind eye to the violation of passenger transportation rules with an Interbus license and allowed the drivers to continue their journey.
If a bus carried more passengers than allowed, they would register them as pedestrians or passengers of other vehicles. They also didn’t charge full taxes for goods entering the country. Previously, the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against three other customs inspectors from the Leuseni Customs Point and one from the Sculeni Customs Point for similar crimes.
