The phenomenon of child abuse is present in Moldova. The most serious thing is that the parents consider that violence is something normal. The issue was discussed in a workshop that centered on the Education Ministry’s order on the prevention of child abuse. The event involved local coordinators of the actions taken to implement the order. They underlined the role played by the teachers and social workers in this process, IPN reports.

Straseni district coordinator Eugenia Mita said the cooperation with the law enforcement bodies that undergo reformation is difficult. “Until recently, there was a Minors and Morals Bureau that always provided support. Now we do not enjoy such support,” she stated. According to her, there are many shortcomings in the school system too. The education institutions do no have money to hire guards and anyone can enter the schools.

The participants in the workshop also discussed the necessity of instituting consultancy services for violent parents who return to the families when the period of the protection orders expire.

Acting Education Minister Maia Sandu said the ministry will continue to train the local coordinators so that they know the procedure for preventing cases of child abuse and become independent in implementing and monitoring it. The child abuse prevention mechanism will be more efficient if a project is implemented to ensure cooperation in providing assistance to child victims and potential victims of abuse, negligence, exploitation and trafficking.
