The Government intends to raise the salaries of teachers by 15% as of January 1, 2024. The reference value for teachers will be increased from 2,000 to 2,300 lei. The Ministry of Education and Research said the pay raises for teachers are higher than those proposed for other categories of employees. This prioritization shows the Government cares about the teachers, the Ministry noted in the wake of events held by education trade unions, IPN reports.

“The Ministry of Education and Research supports and approves of trade unions’ efforts to mobilize society around the problems experienced by teachers. The Ministry is constantly preoccupied with the stimulation and supporting of the education system employees and is taking a number of concrete actions in this regard,” said the institution.

According to the Ministry, in October the Government managed to identify financial resources to pay by a lump sum of 5,000 lei to all teachers and by another lump sum of 3,000 lei to non-teaching staff and this money is being paid to a total number of 102,000 beneficiaries. A sum of 450 million lei was allocated for the purpose. Over the last few months, the Ministry also allocated about 10 million lei for the formation and training of teachers.

The Education and Science Trade Union Federation of the Republic of Moldova staged awareness-raising events in which the teachers demanded higher salaries and decent living and working conditions. They also asked to be respected and protected through a law on anti-violence against teaching staff.
