The teachers may block the teaching process if their salaries are not raised by 50. At the same time, the authorities say they do not have financial resources to fully satisfy their demands. The issue was discussed by the head of the education trade union Dumitru Ivanov and Minister of Education Maia Sandu in the program “Politics” on TV7 channel, IPN reports.

Dumitru Ivanov said that last October they also asked the Government to increase teachers’ pay, but their demands were neglected. “It’s impossible to survive on a salary of 2,200-2,500 lei. That’s why the teachers will not be satisfied if the Government raises the salaries by only several per cent, as it intends,” he stated.

Maia Sandu said that she supports the teachers, but there is not enough money to fully satisfy their claims. “We cannot amend the budget now. Teachers’ salaries will be raised from September. But there are not enough resources to increase the pays of almost 120,000 teachers by 50%,” she stated.

Dumitru Ivanov criticized the school curricula and programs. “When the children start to attend school, they are deprived of childhood. The programs are heavy and the students have to study from morning till evening. This negatively affects their state of health and many children begin to hate school,” he said.

Maia Sandu replied that the reforms done in the education system are aimed at simplifying the curricula, while the teachers are to focus their attention on the quality of education.
