The economic dependence makes the victims of domestic violence to return to aggressors even if they benefit from a period of asylum and psychological counseling in specialized centers. Contacted by IPN, psychologist-pedagogue of the Causeni Maternal Center Ana Schiopu said that specialists warn about the necessity of separating the victim from the aggressor.
The aggressors are contacted and advised to see a psychologist or a narcologist, if necessary, while the women who are victims of domestic violence are urged to develop the respect for oneself and the confidence in their own forces. Many of them come from socially deprived families that have reduced access to information and are thus more predisposed to violence. Specialists tell them what steps to take when they are abused, where to seek help from and what legal procedures to perform.
Causeni Maternal Center director Tatiana Osadci said the prevention of domestic violence is more efficient when several bodies are involved in this process. If a doctor sees a beaten woman, they must immediately inform the police. But the problem is that the victims hide the truth because they are afraid of the aggressor. The victims remain near the aggressor because they don’t have a stable income and don’t have where to go. The Maternal Center accommodates them only for a period of up to six months.
The center also provides services to pregnant young women who were driven away from home. They are helped during pregnancy so as to prevent child abandonment. After they give birth, the young mothers are trained to look after the kids.
The Causeni Maternal Center was opened by the NGO Psychologists’ Association Tighina to help families in difficulty.
