The ecological situation is on top of Moldovans’ concerns, according to the most recent opinion poll by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers of Moldova entitled “Year 2016 in the opinion of Moldovan population,” IPN reports.

“Many neglected the environment and the ecological state. The natural resources have been neglected during 25 years in Moldova and we now reached a situation of public concern,” stated Andrei Dumbraveanu, the Association’s deputy head. He noted that the water and soil are in an alarming state. “We do not have clean water to drink. The sewerage system hasn’t been improved. There are no water treatment stations.”

According to the sociologist, the arable land in Moldova is a benchmark in Europe, but we lose it yearly given the erosion and unwise management. The political class should devote attention to this issue.

Minister of Environment Valeriu Munteanu admits that the situation in the environmental sector is serious, but considers that this is due to the fact that this issue has been neglected in Moldova during 20 years. Contacted by IPN, the minister said that before he took up this post, environment was the last priority in the Government’s agenda. “Environment was the last priority, always the 17th. We discussed and talked to the people about environmental problems and these didn’t remain imperatives of NGOs only. We are glad that the Moldovans will become our allies in dealing with environmental issues,” he stated.

According to the survey “Year 2016 in the opinion of Moldovan population,” among the key concerns of the Moldovans are price rises, unemployment and lack of jobs, poverty, corruption among functionaries of all levels and environmental issues.
